Back in December 2016, the Buckeye State joined the growing list of U.S. states that have embraced medical cannabis. Senate Bill 3 (Ohio’s Medical Marijuana Control Program) allowed for the use of medical marijuana by patients with certain qualifying conditions. This groundbreaking move paved the way for a whole new industry in Ohio, generating jobs, revenue, and providing relief to many who need it.

Fast forward to the present day, and recreational cannabis has been on the minds of Ohioans and policymakers alike. In 2015, the Coalition to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol (CTRMA) submitted petitions with over 300,000 signatures to put a recreational marijuana legalization measure on the ballot for November 2022. However, due to a series of challenges and delays, CTRMA’s efforts did not come to fruition in time.

But don’t let that discourage you! The momentum is building, and Ohioans are more united than ever in their support for recreational cannabis legalization. A recent poll by the Quinnipiac University Poll shows that 63% of Ohio voters support legalizing recreational marijuana use, with 54% favoring a system similar to alcohol regulation.

So, when can we expect to see recreational cannabis on shelves in Ohio? It’s impossible to predict the exact timeline, but there are two key proposals currently being considered by lawmakers that could pave the way for recreational marijuana in the state:

1. Ohio Senate Bill 21 (SB 21): Introduced by Senator Nickie J. Antonio (D-Lakewood), SB 21 would establish a regulated market for adult-use cannabis, similar to what we see in states like Colorado and Oregon. The bill is still being debated, but its passage could bring recreational marijuana to Ohio sooner rather than later.

2. Ohio Ballot Initiative (Secure and Fair Enforcement Banking Act – SAFE Banking): This federal bill, which has already been passed by the House of Representatives, would protect banks and financial institutions that work with state-legal cannabis businesses from being penalized or prosecuted. By providing these protections, the SAFE Banking Act could encourage more investors to back Ohio’s growing cannabis industry, leading to greater success for recreational marijuana efforts in the state.

It’s an exciting time for Ohioans who are eager to see the benefits that a regulated adult-use cannabis market could bring. From generating revenue for our schools and communities to creating jobs and providing another outlet for relaxation and enjoyment, the potential advantages are vast.
